Lily Cole is set to guest star alongside Matt Smith and Karen Gillan in the latest series of Doctor Who, the actress has confirmed.

According to The Sun, the model – currently studying History of Art at Cambridge University – is set to make an appearance as a mysterious sea creature in the show’s pirate-themed episode.

Cole, who has had roles in St. Trinian’s and Heath Ledger film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, is excited about her forthcoming appearance.

She told the newspaper: ‘It is a great script and a fun character and I am glad to be involved.’

The pirate plot looks set to be a star-studded affair, with Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville already signed on to play the Pirate Captain.

Earlier this month stars Karen Gillan and Matt Smith were photographed filming scenes on board a ship in Cornwall, with redhead Karen dressed in full pirate get-up for her role as Amy Pond.

Doctor Who’s sixth series will be aired in two parts, with the first part due to kick off this spring.

Supermodel Lily Cole will play a lead role in an ADC play this term.

Lily, who studies history of art at King’s College, will play the role of Nina in Chekov’s The Seagull, which opens on March 1.

Auditions were held at the end of last term and rehearsals began a week ago in a college room.

One actor who wished to remain anonymous, told student newspaper The Tab: “Word got out that she was trying out for the play, and there were loads of people at auditions.

“Now a few of the people who got the parts are pretty unbearable. You just hear them in the ADC bar telling everyone who will listen about the production they’re doing ‘with Lily’”

There have been a few raised eyebrows. She’s just walked into the lead role of an ADC main show, having never done student theatre before – that is pretty unusual”.

However, The Seagull will not be Cole’s first experience of acting. She played Polly the geek in the 2007 school comedy St. Trinian’s and Velentina in Terry Gilliam’s 2009 fantasy film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the film that Heath Ledger’s untimely death prevented him from completing.

Jacob Shephard, who is playing Sorin in the play, said that she would be treated like any other actress.

He told The Tab: “I’m not big into celebrities and all that. I’m going to treat her the same way as anyone else in the cast.

“She’s been cast as Nina and the director is not the type to cast someone based on their celebrity status. She must be talented and I think working with the whole cast is going to be very rewarding”.

Only 12 per cent of tickets have sold for the six shows, though they are likely to sell out this week at news of Cole’s appearance.
